DUGSI is a leading organization that is working to improve the livelihoods of small-scale farmers in Somalia. By promoting livelihood diversification, income generation, and the use of innovative agricultural practices, DUGSI is helping to build a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector in Somalia. DUGSI promotes livelihood diversification and income generation for small-scale farmers by applying the Farm as a Business (FAAB) approach. This approach helps farmers to adopt agricultural practices that earn them a sustainable income and improve their nutrition status. In recent years, poor rainfall has severely affected crop and livestock production in Somalia. However, DUGSI has provided farmers with the agricultural technologies and means of production they need to be more resilient to climate variability. DUGSI also provides small-scale farmers and agro pastoralists with training and extension in business skills and agricultural practices. This helps to strengthen farmer organizational capacity and promote the following:
- The creation of a sustainable agricultural environment
- The concept of Farming as a Business (FAAB)
- Community socio-economic development
- The connection of small-scale farmers to input suppliers, financial services, and the business market.
- The use of innovative technologies and mechanization tools and services
